The Penelope Pudding Mysteries – Book One : The Mystery of the Buried Suitcase — Chantal Varnier
Tea. A cat. A very nosy neighbour.
And a suitcase that should never have existed.
On the day the Queen dies, Penelope Pudding decides that the world has finally gone too far.
A retired private detective with a sharp eye, a sharper tongue and very little patience for humanity, Penelope abandons England and buys a dilapidated cottage on the island of Jersey.
She expects silence, order and uninterrupted cups of tea.
Instead, her cheerful new neighbour arrives with a dog called Fire — a name that causes considerable public alarm whenever it is shouted across the village.
Then Fire begins digging in Penelope’s garden.
What he unearths is not an old bone.
It is a buried suitcase.
Inside lies £398,500 in cash, carefully preserved evidence and the beginning of a mystery someone has spent years trying to keep hidden.
When an anonymous message is pushed beneath Penelope’s door warning her to stop digging, she realises that the secret buried beneath her cottage is neither forgotten nor harmless.
Someone is watching.
Someone knows what is hidden in the garden.
And someone is prepared to do whatever it takes to prevent the truth from being uncovered.
Reluctantly assisted by Ginette, a neighbour far too enthusiastic for her own good, Fire, the dog with an alarming talent for discovering trouble, and Lord Snuggles, Penelope’s vegetarian and deeply judgemental cat, Penelope must return to the profession she swore she had left behind.
As old lies unravel and carefully buried grudges return to the surface, Penelope discovers that the quietest communities often conceal the loudest secrets.
One suitcase.
Six suspicious holes.
Plenty of lies.
And absolutely no patience.
The Mystery of the Buried Suitcase is the first instalment in The Penelope Pudding Mysteries, a warm, witty British cosy mystery series filled with eccentric neighbours, seaside charm, clever clues, dry humour and an unforgettable amateur detective.
Perfect for readers who enjoy sharp-witted heroines, village mysteries, troublesome animals and crimes best investigated with a properly brewed cup of tea.
